This study examines how Cyprian of Carthage, the most significant bishop in the early Latin tradition, appropriates the canonical Paul.Cyprian, like Paul, is a pastoral theologian, so his pastoral concerns provide a helpful lens through which to study his use of the apostle. These include divine truth and eternal glory; the church's unity, ministry and sacraments; discipline and repentance; and wealth and welfare. Examining Cyprian's use of Paul in these areas allows us to move beyond a simple literal/allegorical paradigm to appreciate the wide range of reading strategies used by Cyprian: model, image, maxim, title, contextual exegesis, direct application, prophetic fulfilment and qualification. It also provides a different perspective on Paul than the one arrived at by privileging a handful of texts. This study of Cyprian's appropriation of Pauline texts therefore illuminates the interplay between text, context and theology in his exegesis. It also deepens our understanding of the early North African hermeneutical tradition and the early reception of Paul.

This volume explores the long-standing tensions between such notions as soul and body, spirit and flesh, in the context of human immortality and bodily resurrection. The discussion revolves around late antique views on the resurrected human body and the relevant philosophical, medical and theological notions that formed the background for this topic. Soon after the issue of the divine-human body had been problematised by Christianity, it began to drift away from vast metaphysical deliberations into a sphere of more specialized bodily concepts, developed in ancient medicine and other natural sciences. To capture the main trends of this interdisciplinary dialogue, the contributions in this volume range from the 2nd to the 8th centuries CE, and discuss an array of figures and topics, including Justin, Origen, Bardais⋅an, and Gregory of Nyssa.

The purpose of the volume is to explore how specific historical and socio-cultura conditions of late antiquity shaped the development of Christian thought. The authors of the volume analyse various aspects of these conditions, particularly those of a textual and institutional nature, as they are reflected in the hermeneutic and philosophical principles of Christian discourse. This focus sheds new light on unexplored features of Christian literature, such as the influence of manuscript culture, early church institutions and practices, exegetical techniques, and philosophical curricula.

The genealogy of Jesus as recorded in the gospels of Matthew and Luke differs. Very early on, this difference gave rise to many questions and discussions amongst Christians. An attempt at reconciliation had considerable success for centuries: that which Julius Africanus (ca. 170-250) put forward in his letter to Aristides on the basis of Judaeo-Christian traditions. Aimed against a less literal interpretation of the gospel genealogies, Africanus' letter underlines a claim that will play an important role all through the Christian history - that of biblical inerrancy.Christophe Guignard provides a new edition, enriched with a new fragment. It is the fruit of an extensive study on the textual tradition that depends entirely on two "ations from Eusebius of Caesarea. Since one of these - included in his 'Gospel Questions' - is now lost, much space was made for the tradition of this work in the writings of the Latin and Oriental Fathers. The Greek text and French translation, the first ever complete translation into a living language, are accompanied by a study that sheds new light on the text and the controversial context that underlies it. It also takes into consideration the traditions Africanus uses, one of which seems to go back to a circle claiming to be related to the family of Jesus.
